Compared to fluidized bed dryers, flash dryers offer distinct advantages when processing pasty, filter-cake-like, and highly viscous materials. Fluidized bed dryers primarily rely on high-speed hot air to convey and disperse powder or granular materials, making them suitable for powders that already have a certain particle size. In contrast, flash dryers are equipped with a rotating mixing and crushing device at the bottom of the drying tower, which can directly break up wet material lumps, filter cakes, and pastes into fine particles without requiring prior grinding or granulation, thus offering greater adaptability.

Inside the flash dryer, a spiral upward rotating airflow is generated. The material undergoes repeated fragmentation and drying through shear, collision, friction, and centrifugal classification. Particles that do not meet the required specifications fall back down for further processing, allowing easier control over product fineness and final moisture content. Fluidized bed dryers typically use straight or pulsating tube conveying systems, resulting in a narrow residence time distribution, but their ability to handle sticky or agglomerating materials is relatively limited. Flash dryers usually integrate drying, grinding, and classification into one unit, featuring a compact structure and high drying intensity per unit volume, making them more suitable for complex materials such as sludge, dyes, mineral filter cakes, and food proteins.
