Spray drying is a continuous process that directly dries liquid feed into powder. The raw liquid (solution, suspension, or emulsion) is atomized into fine droplets by a nozzle and rapidly dispersed. These droplets come into full contact with a hot drying medium—typically hot air—inside the drying tower.
Due to their extremely large surface area, the droplets transfer heat quickly, causing rapid evaporation of moisture within them, thus completing the heat and mass transfer processes in a short time. After dehydration, the liquid droplets form solid particles. Heat exchange between the hot gas stream and the material can be achieved through co-current, counter-current, or mixed flow configurations, selected according to material properties. Drying temperature is carefully controlled to prevent thermal degradation of heat-sensitive materials.
The dried powder is carried by the airflow into separation equipment, where it is collected as finished product via cyclone separators and bag filters. Exhaust gases are purified after dust removal before being discharged. This entire process integrates atomization, drying, and granulation into one step, producing free-flowing powders widely used in food, and chemical industries.
